Post Unsupported video card..
Kinda wondering.. I have a SiS760 and it supposedly doesn't support Linux (any type, I suppose), but regardless-- is there a way I can make it work? I don't want to have to buy a new video card just for that.. :?

Any help/interest is very much appreciated.. even though I don't believe there is anything that can be done, we can try! :)

This page gives a fairly thorough coverage of xorg/xfree86 SiS drivers:

http://www.winischhofer.at/linuxsispart1.shtml

If the video chipset is integrated into your mb and uses shared memory...

I've never been a fan of integrated video chipsets my self and can assure you that purchasing even a "value" card with dedicated memory will reap you rewards in speed and performance you had not assumed with an on board controller no matter what OS you use.

By the way.. was reading on the site you provided, and it says for to work I have to be in linux, which is usually impossible for me.. oddly enough. It has the common graphical errors as a unsupported operating system would.. I'm still looking into it.

Wish me luck...!

nick, to install linux you might have to go for a distribution with a non graphical installer (i.e. an installer that doesn't use x windows) and then fix stuff from the command line. It wouldn't be too difficult for a relatively experienced Linux user, but I can see why you're having problems. I wish I could be more helpful...

You could try starting off with Damn Small Linux which is only a 50 meg ISO. It doesn't use a graphical installer, nor does it install XDM, GDM or KDM which are X session managers. On boot, it just dumps to the text-mode login prompt where, after login, you must type "startx" to begin your X session.

At the prompt, you can type "mc", this will start Midnight Commander, a text-mode file manager with built-in text file editor. This might be a little easier than trying to negotiate everything from a command prompt.

DSL is Debian based and after a hard disk installation, you can build as large of an installation as you desire... that is after you solve your video driver problems of coarse. :D

Okay color me stupid, but are you sure this isn't supported? A quick [google]SiS760 linux[/google] Google took me to http://www.winischhofer.at/linuxsispart1.shtml [3rd result] which states:
Quote:
Installing any driver downloaded from this website does not mean installing some sort of "third party" software. I am, in fact, the author and maintainer of both the official X.org and XFree86 SiS/XGI driver as well as the Linux kernel's SiS/XGI framebuffer driver.

So someone is working on it, and a little further down I saw
Quote:
2. Supported SiS/XGI graphics chips and video bridges
* The old series (SiS 5597/5598, 6326/AGP/DVD, 530, 620),
* the 300 series (SiS 300/305, 540, 630/S/ST, 730/S),
* the 315 series (SiS 315/E/PRO, 550, [M]650, 651, 740, [M]661[FMG]X, [M]741[GX]),
* the 330 series (SiS 330 "Xabre", [M]760[GX], [M]761[GX]), and
* the 340 series (XGI V3XT, V5, V8, Z7; SiS342 - yet to be released).

Emphasis mine.

Please note I am really not trying to put you down. I could very well be missing something here.. All I am trying to say is that if nothing else, this guy has found a way to support your card on linux.

He commits his "Free" version to X.org where it should be included with any distro using X.org, from what I see of the license, should be any most Debian distros as at a glance it's GPL licensed so it qualifies for inclusion..

Anyway, long winded post, my apologizes ;)

P.S. just noticed crowmag pointed this site out as well.. Basiclly, you should have atleast some support with any Distro, personally I recommend Debian [testing or unstable in case anyone was wondering.]

If I remembered correctly (which maybe I didn't) I thought that site said it.. but regardless, you can sort of tell its unsupported by using Linux.. if I didn't say so, I was using ubuntu linux..

Anyway, I'm pretty much a n00b in all things Linux, but ubuntu was fun and pretty easy to toy with, and I have the discs.. havn't tried the driver out yet though..

Thanks for pointing out some.. things..

Post Unsupported video card
all Ive ever done to get a wireless card to work in Ubuntu is make sure my Kernel is up to date, and enable the card in the Restricted Drivers Manager if necessary.

Fortunately, the wireless card I use contains an Atheros chipset, so no drivers are required.
